Symptoms of Gum Disease
If your gums are red and swollen or bleeding, you may be among the 76% of U.S. adults affected by periodontal disease, also called gum disease. Periodontal disease is an incurable bacterial infection that causes red, swollen gums. While the inflammation may be painless, it can cause serious damage to your gums, teeth and jaw. Dr. Jeff S. Luffey, DDS, is an Albuquerque family dentist who can halt the problem before it causes tooth loss or other serious issues.
Plaque is constantly forming on our teeth, so it’s important to have good dental hygiene habits—such as brushing and flossing twice daily—to remove plaque.
When we fail to remove plaque, it accumulates and starts irritating and inflaming our gums.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
- Gums that bleed easily.
- Gums that are tender, red and swollen.
- Pus between the teeth and gums when pressed.
- Chronic bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth.
- Gums that seem to be pulling away from your teeth.
- A change in your bite or the way your teeth fit together.
- Loose teeth.
The most important way to prevent periodontal disease is through regular teeth cleanings and dental checkups. During your checkup, Dr. Luffey and his dental hygienists will evaluate your gums to ensure they are healthy. If periodontitis is present, Dr. Luffey will perform gum disease treatment to treat the infection and prevent further damage to the gums and teeth.
Treating Periodontal Disease
Gum disease treatment removes deposits of tartar, plaque and bacteria in the pockets between your teeth and gums. Dr. Luffey often does this through tooth scaling and root planing, a deep dental cleaning that removes hard plaque and tartar (also called calculus) from the pockets between your teeth and gums. During your appointment, Dr. Luffey will explain how to remove the bacteria that causes gum disease at home so you can achieve optimal levels of daily oral hygiene.
Sedation Dentistry for Your Comfort
If you are afraid of the dentist, Dr. Luffey offers sedation dentistry for your comfort. Sedation dentistry allows you to relax while Dr. Luffey treats periodontitis. The medication given will keep you conscious, but it will also keep you comfortable enough to allow treatment to be performed. Sedation dentistry is so effective, many of our patients leave our office without any memory of the procedure having taken place!
With today’s advances in sedation dentistry and general dentistry, there’s no reason to put off important dental treatments any longer. Whether you need root canal therapy, gum disease treatment or any other treatment related to your oral health, Dr. Luffey and his team are here to provide a comfortable dental experience that improves your overall quality of life.
